The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems is one of the ancient departments at the University of Tripoli, which was established in 1972, and had a prominent role in qualifying many national cadres, some of which reached higher positions in the country. The Department of Geography has kept pace with the development that has taken place in the field of knowledge in general and geographical knowledge in particular, as it has updated its programs and study plans for the bachelor's degree and has developed postgraduate programs for the master's and doctoral stages that have graduated many distinguished and qualified cadres. He was helped by his national cadres, and the department was not satisfied with developing programs and study plans, but also created a distinct infrastructure represented in laboratories containing advanced computer devices and advanced programs in GIS technology, where it obtains a license from the American Azri company for this type of publications through its agent Al-Khan Company in Libya, and other programs in remote sensing, statistical analysis and other computer programs necessary to be a tool used It trains students practically on developments in the field of geographical analysis using technology in addition to creating the appropriate climate for faculty members to carry out their research using these modern technologies.

The Department of Geography seeks to build specialized scientific and research cadres capable of diagnosing community problems and contributing to the development of effective solutions to them through the laboratories within the department, as it is qualified to carry out large research projects for institutions and ministries that suffer from some problems and find successful solutions to them, in addition to holding training courses for employees of the government and private sectors in the fields of geographic information systems, remote sensing, statistical analysis and others, which makes it contribute to serving community issues more realistically and effectively.

The department is concerned with the study of natural and human phenomena and the interrelationships between them and determining their characteristics and distribution patterns. It works to provide qualified and trained national competencies in the field in various geographical fields and techniques, to contribute to achieving the objectives of development plans and meet the requirements of the labor market. It works to open up to society through research, studies, scientific consultations, and training courses it provides in various fields.
