Description
The aim of Translation and Interpreting postgraduate Programme is to train our students to become well-equipped and competent translators and interpreters to translate and interpret texts and discourses in English and Arabic at all levels and in all fields effectively, to carry out academic studies at national and international levels, and to contribute to translation studies.
Objectives
Enabling distinguished students with university degrees to continue their higher studies in their favorite specialization .
Preparing scientific and professional cadres and competencies specialized in translation and interpretation studies.
Preparing competencies capable of facing the growing challenges in the labor market while providing them with the necessary skills they need to overcome those challenges.
· Preparing graduate students and qualifying them to contribute to filling the shortage of the needs of Libyan universities in the field of teaching translation for the undergraduate level

Entry Reuirements
Entry requirements:
The applicant Must have a first university degree or its equivalent with a good grade in English language or translation .
Two recommendation letters from professors who have previously taught him/ her.
TtThe applicant should pass the entry exam.

The Master in Translation studies prepares students to qualify for Master in Translation studies. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

This course is designed to assist students to be familiarized with current research methods in translation. It provides an opportunity for students to establish their understanding of research through critical exploration of research language, ethics, and approaches. It orients students with the methodology of writing up research, the procedures of writing a proposal, an outline, quoting authors, paraphrasing, and punctuations. Topics include the layout of a research report, hypothesis statement, sampling, data gathering and analysis.

In this course, a student is acquainted with the main skills and scientific foundations for how to present and present information, data and research results used in local and international scientific lectures, meetings and conferences. It also provides students with how to prepare the presentation by preparing the contents from the introduction, topic, conclusion, application and evaluation. Students are subject to practical training for these skills. Students will be able to present and discuss their research in an academic and scientific manner using modern technology. Students will be able to release stress, fears, and negative feelings that prevent them from speaking. Gain the skills and qualities of a good speaker, in addition to how to deal with the audience and how to talk to them, and gain the skill of good presentation and preparation. This course introduces some of the major concepts in translation theory and introduces the students to major concepts in translation theory and shows how to apply them in translation practice. The course focuses on the concepts of translation in general and the developments of translation theories in specific. It introduces students to the approaches, strategies, and studies and views of the translation scholars. Students will be encouraged critical thinking on language use and translation, and will develop their understanding of the factors which impact on the discipline - such as style, text type, idiomatic language, and cultural differences.

This course deals with translating legal documents from English into Arabic, with a special focus on understanding and translating a variety of legal contracts and other business-related legal documents that commonly require English- Arabic translation. Various aspects of business-related laws, such as corporate law, environmental law, intellectual property law, will be introduced and relevant documents from these areas studied and translated. Elements of legal writing style as they relate to such documents will be introduced as essential preparation for this type of formal translation work.

The linguistic features of the various language use in print media will be examined. Different types of texts, their functions and discourse will be compared. Appropriate strategies used in translating media texts will be introduced. This course aims to examine journalistic discourse, focus on differences in language use in print media, follow current print media and practice translating media texts, build journalistic terminology.

An advanced course in translation with a focus on scientific and technical texts. Students deepen their knowledge of translation theory and are trained to build and consolidate their skills in specialized translation. Also, it aims to examine and translate different types of scientific and technical texts in English and Arabic.

Introducing the students to basic skills and strategies in simultaneous interpreting from English into Arabic; performing intensive practical training in the interpreting lab on how to handle spoken discourse adequately for interpreting purposes; developing some standard techniques such as hearing, backward oral and written counting while listening, shadowing , echoing and reconstruction of oral messages; exposing students to different interpreting contexts such as courts, hospitals, public stations and institutions, press conferences, national and international conventions that cover disciplines such as business, trade, politics, and medicine.
