الملخص
Teaching listening skills is one of the most challenging and time-consuming tasks for any language teacher. Teachers tend to use new technologies to help them in language teaching. This research aimed to determine the role of audiovisual aids in improving English listening comprehension skills. Twenty-one Kasr-Alkiar College third-year students enrolled in the listening course participated in this study. Three major research questions posed: Q1- How much would subtitled movies improve students' listening skills? Q2-What are students’ and lecturers’ perceptions toward using movies with English subtitles, Arabic subtitles, and no subtitles in their courses? Q3- Is there a negative or a positive relationship between the usage of audiovisual learning material and students' listening skills? Which style of subtitles is more likely to be beneficial in Listening, Arabic or English? The researcher used experimentation to determine the association between watching subtitled movies and improving listening comprehension skills. Then, the researcher administered two closed-ended questionnaires to assess teachers' and students' attitudes toward using English-subtitled movies to improve listening comprehension skills. This research employed two semi-structured interviews to explain and extend the research methods' results. The study randomly divided the participants into three groups, a control group, and two treatment groups. Later, the researcher gave all groups the same pre-and post-tests. However, findings revealed that watching subtitled movies is beneficial in increasing and improving undergraduates’ listening skills. The data indicated that both groups of students and teachers favor using subtitled movies in their classes to increase listening comprehension skills.
