الملخص

The present study attempted to identify and investigate the problems and difficulties encountered by the Libyan learners and their instructors in learning and teaching of English as a foreign language in large classes. The main aims of this thesis were to investigate the areas of problems and difficulties in learning and teaching EFL, to describe and explain the students’ and their instructors’ problems and difficulties in learning and teaching in large classes. In addition, it presented special strategies that could help students and their instructors to deal with those problems and how to overcome them.A questionnaire for EFL students as well as their instructors was used to collect the data for this investigation at the Department of English, Faculty of languages, The University of Tripoli.The results of this current study revealed that EFL students and their instructors encounter several difficulties and problems in learning and teaching processes because of the number of students in the same class. Therefore, this study suggested a variety of educational and practical strategies for managing those classes in the learning and teaching processes.On the light of the results, several recommendations for both the students and their instructors were suggested to reduce the negative effects of large classes on students and their instructors, such as, dividing students in to groups, controlling/managing the class, considering the students’ attendance, using technology, interacting with their students, using a variety of activities and encouraging students to speak.
